Description

The MTX70HDR is Multiquip's high-altitude variant of the MTX70 platform — paired with the Honda GXR120, a high-output OHC engine purpose-engineered for rammer applications and tuned for performance at elevation. Crews use the MTX70HDR on jobs the standard MTX70HD's GX100 can't sustain efficiently: mountain-corridor utility builds, ski-area infrastructure, mining-camp construction, and high-plateau pipeline backfill where thin-air engine performance is critical.

The shoe doesn't care about the engine — physics is physics, and the laminated wood pad takes the same impact loading whether the rammer is at sea level or 9,000 feet. But high-elevation jobs have secondary effects on shoe life that crews don't always plan around. Drier air at altitude accelerates wood pad shrinkage and lamination separation. Mountain soils are typically rockier and more abrasive than valley-floor clays. The wood face wears faster, the bolt holes elongate sooner, and the shoe replacement interval shortens compared to lowland use of the same machine.

OEM part 8511S is the genuine Multiquip 11-inch wood shoe kit, manufactured to the same factory specification that ships on a new MTX70HDR. It replaces legacy part numbers 366910020 and 362910130 — all three numbers identify the same kit.

Kit Contents

Component Function
Laminated wood shoe pad Ground-contact compaction surface; multi-ply for shock absorption
Tempered steel base plate Structural interface between wood pad and rammer foot
Square-neck mounting bolts Through-bolt the assembly to the foot housing
Lock washers Anti-loosening preload retention
Nylon lock nuts Vibration-resistant nut-side retention

The MTX-Series Operation Manual describes the shoe as "laminated wood with tempered steel plate for superior shock absorption." That two-layer construction matters more on the MTX70HDR than on the standard HD — the GXR120's slightly different power band means the spring cylinder transmits a marginally different impulse profile, and an unworn, factory-spec shoe is what the rest of the rammer was designed to absorb against.

High-Altitude Installation Considerations

  • Re-torque after the first hour — at elevation, the temperature differential between cold-start and operating temperature is greater, and bolt preload migrates more in the first hour of run time than at sea level.
  • Inspect the bellows clamp seal — dry mountain air dehydrates rubber components faster. Check the orange bellows (368346180) condition while you have the shoe off; a dehydrated bellows that hasn't yet failed visually will fail soon after a shoe replacement that increases compaction efficiency.
  • Plan shorter replacement intervals — assume 70–80% of standard MTX70HD shoe life when budgeting fleet maintenance for elevation work.

Frequently Asked Questions — MTX70HDR Wood Shoe

Q: Is the MTX70HDR shoe different from the MTX70HD shoe? No. Both models use the same 11-inch wood shoe kit (Multiquip 8511S). The R-series designation refers to the Honda GXR120 engine package, not the foot assembly. The shoe footprint, bolt pattern, and mounting hardware are identical between MTX70HD and MTX70HDR.

Q: Why does my MTX70HDR shoe wear faster than the spec sheet suggests? High-altitude operation typically reduces shoe life by 20–30% relative to sea-level use of the same machine, due to drier air accelerating wood pad shrinkage and the typically more abrasive mountain soil substrate.

Q: Can I install the 8511S myself, or do I need a Multiquip-authorized service center? Field installation is straightforward with basic hand tools — the kit ships with all required hardware. If your MTX70HDR is under warranty and the shoe failure was accompanied by other foot-assembly damage, document the install with photos to preserve warranty coverage on adjacent components.

Q: Does the 8511S fit other R-series MTX rammers? The 8511S also fits the MTX80HDR (the 11-inch shoe is shared across the full MTX70/80/90 platform). It does not fit the smaller MTX50HD or MTX60HD, which use a 10.4-inch shoe with a different mounting footprint.

Important Ordering Notes

  • Make sure the part numbers are correct, certain parts are serial number specific. The MTX70HDR has had production revisions — verify your serial plate matches the HDR designation before ordering.
  • Contact us for parts identification and confirmation of part numbers. Email [email protected] with engine label, serial plate, and foot assembly photos for confirmation.
  • Certain items may be drop shipped direct from the manufacturer. Orders may arrive in separate packages with individual tracking numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use this diagram?

Match the Ref. # on the diagram to the row in the parts list at the right. Click a part name to see details, price, and add it to cart.

How do I make sure a part fits my machine?

Confirm your model/series and serial number range on the product page. Many
manufacturers have serial breaks, when in doubt, share your model and serial with us and we’ll verify fit.

What do the Ref. numbers and quantities mean?

The Ref. # points to the callout on the drawing. Qty shows how many of that item your machine uses. Parts are sold individually unless noted as a kit.

Are these genuine parts?

Yes, we supply genuine OEM parts for all our brands. If a part has an approved
replacement, we ship the latest superseded revision.

Why does my original part number look different?

Manufacturers often supersede numbers. Our pages list the current orderable number and show older numbers in the description when available. Your old number will cross-reference to the correct part.

I can’t find a part in this diagram, can you still get it?

Yes. Some items are not pictured or are shared with other assemblies. Send us the model, serial, and a description (or photo) and we’ll locate it.

Is there a warranty on these parts?

Yes. DanseUSA passes the manufacturer’s warranty to you. Coverage applies to defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for 30 days from the purchase date, in line with the manufacturer’s warranty policy. Terms can vary by brand; the product page reflects
the applicable policy. If a claim is needed, we’ll help coordinate with the manufacturer.

Do you accept returns?

Yes, most new, uninstalled items can be returned under our standard policy. Please see our Returns & Refunds Policy for eligibility, timeframes, and any exceptions.
